Depression Risk May be Reduced by Drinking Wine

Depression is a mental health problem that affects millions of people all over the world. For many, this condition is hard to overcome, and it affects their daily lives in myriad ways. Therefore, it is no wonder that people are continually searching for the solution that will help them finally get rid of their depressed emotions so they can finally start to enjoy life again.

One interesting bit of information that has been released is in regards to the connection between depression and wine drinking. It turns out that drinking wine might help you feel less depressed. Keep reading to learn more about this topic.

What Studies Suggest Regarding Depression and Wine

The results of a recent study conducted in Spain have just revealed – in the August 30 issue of the BMC Medicine journal – that a glass of wine every day may not only be good for heart health, but it may also help to reduce the risk of depression.

Although drinking excessive amounts of alcohol – such as wine – could be a sign of mental health issues such as depression, drinking a single glass every day may actually benefit mental health, said the study’s authors.

According to Dr. Miguel Martinez-Gonzales, the lead researcher in the study as well as the University of Navarra (Pamplona) chair for the department of preventive medicine and public health, “One drink a day, preferentially wine, may help prevent depression.”

Some Things to Consider Before Heading Out to Buy a Lot of Wine

Though the researchers in this study looking into the depression wine connection appear convinced by their results, a number of mental health experts who were not involved in this research were not as enthusiastic about what was found. It should also be noted that what this research was able to accomplish was to determine a link between emotional well-being and moderate wine consumption. It was not able to prove any cause and effect.

It is the belief of Martinez-Gonzalez that the benefits that are available through wine drinking for encouraging better heart health are the same properties that help to prevent depression. He stated that “Depression and heart disease seem to share some common mechanisms because they share many similar protective factors and risk factors.” Equally, he also stated that people should not begin drinking wine simply to try to stave off depression.

He explained that individuals who do not typically drink should not simply begin drinking wine in order to help to prevent the onset of prevention. He also stated that for those who do already drink alcohol, it is a good idea to do so in moderation, that is, one drink or fewer every day. He stated that wine was preferable to other forms of alcoholic beverage.

The Spanish study is not the first to suggest that there is a depression wine connection and there are a benefits to drinking a moderate amount of wine every day. An adjunct psychology professor from Northwestern University (Evanston, Illinois), named Tony Tang, explained that this latest research aligns with the findings of previous studies that have also suggested modest health benefits to moderate alcohol consumption. He also pointed out that there could be a number of other issues at play that are connecting wine and depression.

Should You Try It?

So, should you go out and buy a lot of wine to drink every day so that you can reduce your depression? Not so fast. Although the research does advise that you keep your drinking of alcohol to a moderate amount, this strategy is not appropriate for everyone. And, according to the NHS, it wouldn’t really be a good idea to start drinking wine just so you can feel less depressed. That’s because it isn’t really possible to predict that this tactic will be effective. In fact, the results of this study do not even apply to individuals who have already been diagnosed with depression, as those people are told to avoid alcoholic beverages, including wine.

There are better ways to tackle depression, and they include:

  • Getting exercise to move your body and stay physically active
  • Reaching out to others for support whenever you need to talk
  • Eating right and making sure you are getting all of the nutrients your body needs
  • Getting enough sleep every night to rest your body
  • Doing things you enjoy, while keeping stress levels down with relaxation techniques
  • Getting more sunshine throughout the year

Remember, too, that if you are really struggling with depression, and you have tried a lot of different techniques to feel better but none of them have worked, it’s best to talk to a doctor or therapist who can help you find the solutions that will work for you.

The bottom line is this: alcohol shouldn’t always be considered a solution to your depression. In fact, experts generally recommend avoiding it because it can negatively impact your mood. Stick with tried-and-true solutions that promote overall health instead.
